This is probably more extreme than you want to hear, but I once read an article in a body building magazine in which the author would wake up in the middle of the night to have a large sandwich. His reasoning was that the liver ran out of glucose after four hours of starvation and would then take the glucose away from his muscle thus making it harder for him to gain mass. I can't remember the exact results, but I know he gained muscle from this short experiment.

But other than that, every professional bodybuilder I've read about eats six times a day so that they can ingest more total calories. I know very few successful bodybuilders who only eat three times a day. Make sure you eat right before you go to bed, and again in the morning.

All that being said, if you've got skinny guy genetics, then chances are you're going to be skinny no matter what you do. I suggest being happy about it and start doing rock climbing. Those guys are all skinny and you'd fit right in and be very successful (I know, because I'm a rock climber too). My brother is trying to fight his genetics too, and he's miserable. Don't be like him, it'd be a waste of your life.

hmm yeah. I think its mainly because of my genetics and my high metabolic rate. I only eat three meals a day which doesnt really help but i'll try to eat more. I probably wont go all crazy over this bulking up thing but i just to be a leeeetle bit bigger.

I understand. I'm only 5'6". I don't want to be 6 feet, but sometimes it would be nice just to have one or two more inches of height.

oK i know im a bit slow on this one but i just hve 2 say that your wrong when u said "if you've got skinny guy genetics, then chances are you're going to be skinny no matter what you do". Thats not true da fact is that if your skinny you can ALWAYS overcome it with a very high calorie based daily diet with enough protein.

People with genetics that hinder themselves from building muscle mass can always make up what they're not blessed with. As long as the person picks up good habbits like a consistant diet and enough sleep. Obviously breaking down ur muscle (working out) comes first but its not the most important

Yeah i agree i was skinny as a kid and i still have a high metabolism so if i feel hungry i just eat..Eat hard and train hard and you'll gain muscle...another advantage with being slim is you will cut up easy when u start to put on the muscle... Very Happy

to gain weight, you have to consume more calories than your body uses. People with high metobolism have a harder time putting on mass, but just keep eating more and more until you start gaining weight.

Best way to is to figure out how much to eat is to count calories.. Count how much calories you take in for a week to maintain your weight right now, and maybe add another 400 calories PER DAY to that number and see how that affects you. If you arent gaining any weight then add more. That was what I did to go from 150 to 185 in less than a year (mnostly muscle)

Good luck

do not listen to this guy. trying to increase calorie intake by consuming excess protein is toxic. you need to consume more carbs with low GI. choose wholegrain - brown rice, wholemeal bread etc....

the only way to gain size is by consuming more carbs. yes you will put on fat but roughly 70% of weight gain is lean muscle mass. and you can shed the fat from cardio.

i suggest eat 5 big meals a day every 2-3 hours. try to aim for a weight gain of 1-2 lbs per week.

I don't usually say anything on this forum but I can't let this one go. How are you going to quote someone and then total misrepresent what they said?

LMTGJ said a high calorie diet with ENOUGH PROTEIN!! Not eat a high calorie diet with the extra calories made up with protein. He certainly did not encourage anyone to eat toxic amounts of protein that was all in your head.

And as for THE ONLY WAY to increase size is to jack up your carb intake, you are just on another planet with that one... The only thing you said I agree with is eating low GI carbs over high GI.

No one can tell anyone else how much of any one macro nutrient you need over a forum, you need to work out your calorie intake and macro nutrient ratio based on your current situation and your goals or talk to a QUALIFIED DIETITIAN and let them do the hard work.

His point about consuming enough protein doesn't make sense. What he should've said was consuming enough carbs for weight gain. and the reason why I said that was because many people have a misconception that more protein is the way to go.

You don't have to consume carbs for size. You can consume excess fat and protein to put on size if you prefer as long as energy input is greater than energy output.

I never claim to be an expert. Someone asked for advice and I simply share my knowledge. You don't have to believe everything I say.

If you're not an expert you should not start you're advice by disregarding other peoples advice, especially as you stated it didn't make sense to you.

It made sense to me I think you should read it again, it's not a misconception that you need protein to grow, your body can't make essential amino acids and essential fatty acids from carbs, it needs to obtain these things from protein and fat in your diet.

I think what your talking about is the misconception in body building that you need an insanely high proten to fat/carbs ratio in order to succeed in gaining lean mass. I do not however feel LMTGJ was perpetuating this point of view.

Also I feel the misconception that you need a ridiculous amount of carb to protein/fat ratio is just as if not more dangerous, putting on a ton of weight and then cutting off the fat after may be ok for a body builder or you but personally as a body weight specialist and athlete I would never use this strategy.

I think you owe LMTGJ an apology for the opening on your 1st message as what he said is a lot closer to the truth than what you said. lol!

Ok I'm not the type to go back and forth on the internet, so I hope this clears everything up.

Carbohydrates wont increase muscle size or muscle cells because thats not their role. They will help to increase the size of the muscle, so they do assist the muscle building process but they dont build muscles themselves.

Carbs are for energy, carbs build a sterdy foundation for protein to start doing what they do best, increase muscular tissue.
Alot of things are important to help to build muscle mass but I didnt put much emphasis on that stuff because without protein your muscle cells wont increase. Without carbs and depending on what else you eat your muscle will use the protein as a source of energy to make up for the lack of carbs. It will take an necessary amount from the protein and other sources to refuel its energy loss taken away from it in exercise and it there is still protein left it will go into the muscle building process. That being said you can still put on muscle mass even with little amount of carbs. Thats why there are products out there that have low carb and more protein, for them people who are watching their weight but want to add muscle mass (yeah i know your going to say the industry is messed up which is true but not all are lies).

Like i said before there are many factors that help the muscle building process e.g water, fat, vitamins and other stuff (which is to long to go in to) but it wont make you increase muscle cells without protein. Im not against carbs either thats where some of the high calories come from. I said it very basic in the beginning, so i wouldnt have to write as much as i have just done. When i said high calories I mean from good sources not sweets and I didnt mean high calories + protein. The high calories include the protein and even though I am implying that protein is the most important for muscle cell to increase, I hope you dont think that Im saying that its the main source that make up the high calories. I am also not saying alot of protein, I am saying enough for your own individual body. So obviously with that said, where are all the calories going to come from? The "sources". I thought this was common sense so i didnt go into some of the "sources" that make up the high calories, thats why i kept it simple and but emphasis on high calories and enough protein.

I am no expert on this things BUT, here is my advice and if someone has something to say way better:

You should eat at between 1,5 and 2,2 grams of protein per 1 kilogram of bodyweight. More than that it is just stupid and there is no studies that say you should eat more, with that you should have your nitrogen levels good for anabolism and enough for body reconstruction. I used to do weight training and ate 4 grams per kilogram and it was awful my liver suffered a lot it is not advisable.

Maybe a second thing would be to get a daily calories number to achieve, a third would be the grams of fat (i personally like 1 gram per kilogram of bodyweight) and finally with this you can calculate the number of carbohydrates, because it is a known fact that fat has 9 kcal per gram, proteins 4 and carbohydrates 4.

If you do not want to calculate fully yout diet, you should watch for the number i just gave for proteins, have at least 5 meals the most you can, eat well, healthy, stay away from animal fat, eat good fats from extravirgin oils or dry fruits as almonds, avoid simple carbohidrates, drink a lot of water and that is pretty much it.

Peace

this isnt true, you can eat and drink as much protein as you want. it isnt toxic!!!!!!!!!! all your body will do is just p*ss any excess protein that your body doesnt need out. theres only one disadvantage to taking a large dose of protein is that you could be wasting your money. you need to experiment and workout the correct protein input for you! no point asking anyone what theres is because it will be different! ive always been skinny. im 5ft 9 and weighd 64 kilos. ive been hitting the bars for quite a few months now and am weighing 68.5 kilos its a lot of weight gain. the way ive put this weight on is by eating very regular, lots of carbs and a good intake of protein and a healthy balanced diet... remember eat often!! hope this helps

there is no other better way than gym for muscle mass..
of course bars and more cool and give you strength but unfortunately not extreame mass.

Because your metabolism is fast i would suggest you eating complex carbonates and proteins which will hold more time at your body .

By complex I mean hard REALL FOOD

RED MEAT WITH FAT ON IT
SPAGETY
MACARONI
POTATOES
RICE
CORNS
AND RED MEAT AGAIN WITH FATS ON IT

DO GYM WHILE EATING THIS

after 2 years you gona be muscled and fat

and then take your time to rip of fat and you will stay with MUSCLE CLEAN SEXY BODY AND RIP OFF GIRLS

TAKES TIME BUT WORTHS YOU ALL..
Dont LIE to your self be TRUE and just fuking do it its all about you and your will and how much you want it..
